Where to enjoy the firefly show in Tokyo

In June, nature lovers can enjoy the enchanting spectacle of the firefly ballet. Here are three places to admire this true wonder.

Fireflies (蛍 – ほたる – hotaru) in Japanese culture

Of course, there's the cult classic animated film from Studio Ghibli, "Grave of the Fireflies." But did you know that in poetry, fireflies are associated with passionate love, and that in folklore, their light symbolizes the souls of soldiers fallen in battle? They also appear in Japanese idioms, such as the comical 蛍族 (ほたるぞく, hotaruzoku, or firefly clan), which refers to people who are forced to smoke outdoors; in the distance, only the glow of their cigarette is visible, resembling a firefly. And let's not forget the song "Hotaru no Hikari" by the group Ikimono Gakari, very popular in Japan and used in the anime series "Naruto: Shippūden.".

As you might have guessed, these beetles are very popular in the Japanese archipelago! Want to admire their graceful ballet? Here are 3 spots in the Tokyo area.

Yuyake Koyake Fureai no Sato

Located near Mount Takao in Hachioji City, Yukake Koyake Fereai no Sato is a charming complex featuring a lovely park, hot springs (onsen), and a hotel. Why not spend a night there to enjoy the firefly spectacle in the park after dark, then relax in a natural hot spring?

  • Price Adults 100 yen, children 50 yen

Narita Farm Land

Spanning approximately 25,000 square meters, Narita Farm Land is the largest working farm in the region. Fruits, vegetables, and flowers are grown there year-round. But what's truly special is that you can book a tour of this magnificent farm, purchase their fresh produce, and participate in various activities. During firefly season, you can enjoy the spectacular evening display.

The Chinzanso Hotel

This is undoubtedly one of the most upscale hotels in the capital. Located in the Bunkyo ward, the Chinzanso is a true oasis in the heart of the city. The hotel raises its own fireflies, nestled within a magical garden. It's possible to book a ticket to visit the firefly park without staying overnight. If your budget allows, the hotel organizes buffet dinners for the occasion (expect to pay around €100).
