Earth Day Tokyo, the major ecological event

Due to its animistic and Shinto influences, Japanese culture has a close relationship with nature. In fact, this relationship directly influences the Japanese people's attitude towards ecology. Although much remains to be done for Japan to become a truly ecological country, it is clear that Japanese citizens are very sensitive to environmental issues. Earth Day is proof of this!

Mains qui tiennent la TerreHistory

Earth Day, celebrated the , first appeared in the United States in 1970.

At the time, this event was motivated by the desire to integrate environmental and ecological issues into political debates. It was, in fact, following the celebration of the first Earth Day that the United States Environmental Protection Agency was created.

The story doesn't end there! In 1990, Earth Day became a global event and to this day it is celebrated in 184 countries (including Japan). It brings together hundreds of millions of participants each year, making it the world's largest environmental demonstration.

As an aside, The proclamation of International Earth Day was signed in February 1971 by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Since then, it has been traditional to celebrate this day by ringing the Peace Bell at the equinox, a bell presented to the United Nations in 1954… by Japan!
