[Practical Japan] Where to shop in Tokyo?

Although the question arises less when visiting Japan, it is nevertheless useful to know where to shop when planning to live for several months, or even years, in the Archipelago. In this article, we detail the options available to you if you are considering living in Tokyo.

The konbini

The most convenient option… but not the most economical! These convenience stores are open 24/7, all year round. You can find everything there: fresh produce, frozen foods, everyday items, drinks, tobacco, stationery, etc.

The 3 big names are Seven Eleven, Family Mart And Lawson. In Tokyo, there are so many that no matter where you live or study/work, you'll always find at least one konbini within a 5-10 minute radius!

We recommend this option for obtaining supplementary products or for picking up prepared meals to eat on the go.

Shopping malls

There is a dedicated food area in most large shopping centers. Often located on the lower floors, it is sometimes a real supermarket, sometimes a "food court", that is to say a space bringing together many different food stalls and/or shops.

This option is ideal if you're looking for a wide variety of products; in fact, you'll often find international items there. Note that shopping centers generally close between 8 pm and 9 pm. The most well-known shopping centers are SeiyuLumine, Seibu And Tokyo

Supermarkets

The most classic… and most economical option. The quality/quantity/price ratio is the most favorable. Unlike the options mentioned above, supermarkets are devoted almost exclusively to food and everyday consumer goods.

Tip: Whether in shopping malls or regular supermarkets, many fresh products (meat, fish, prepared meals, etc.) are discounted by 10 to 50% at the end of the day. This is a great opportunity to buy, for example, Wagyu beef for the price of a regular steak!

Store sizes vary depending on the neighborhood. Generally, they are open Monday through Sunday, and it's not uncommon to find some that close around midnight! Some of the best-known chains include... Maruetsu, Aeon - My basket, Peacock, Comodi-iida And Ozeki
