Japan Comic Art Expo Tokyo 2022

Manga and Japanese animation fans, get your diaries out! This article is for you!

Passion for Japanese animation

For many, the passion for Japan was born through contact with its pop culture. From Captain Harlock to Demon's Slayer, via Dragon Ball and Naruto, the French public has embraced Japanese heroes for over 40 years.

While festivals celebrating Japanese pop culture are multiplying in our region, it remains difficult to meet Japanese artists at the same event – even in the Land of the Rising Sun!

Fortunately for fans, a festival exclusively for artists was established a few years ago. It brings together authors, illustrators, and character designers from both the new and old generations.

The Japan Comic Art Expo

Also known as "Brave and Bold," this convention celebrates Japanese and international graphic artists who have worked in animation, comics, and manga. This 8th edition will bring together more than 40 artists. Among them:

  • Junichi Hayama (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Yu-gi-oh!),
  • Mamoru Yokota (Death Note, Naruto Shippuuden),
  • Hisashi Kagawa (Sailor Moon, Toriko)
  • or even the rising star of Marvel comics, Peach Momoko (Marvel's Demon Days).

Once you've paid the entrance fee, you're free to meet the artists. Each one offers different services and prices. And the best part? They sometimes even give free autographs! Between autographs, commissions, and unique merchandise, you're sure to find something you love!

Tips for making the most of the Japan Comic Art Expo

We recommend that you bring shikishi (色紙), Japanese cardboard drawing boards used for drawing or receiving autographs, as the artists do not bring them.

It's also good to know that most artists offer commissions in advance. To find out, follow your favorite artists on social media. The advantage? You're guaranteed to get the original illustration of your dreams, because the convention is so crowded that artists can't take on commissions for everyone. So, be prepared to be patient to get what you want.

Finally, live performances are organized and the productions are auctioned off (silent or live). Be warned, make sure you have a well-lined wallet because auctions can reach several thousand euros for productions by the most popular artists.
