You'll find welcome respite from the humid Japanese summer and a breathtaking landscape in autumn during the spectacular fall foliage (Kōyō or Momiji). Mount Takao 高尾山

A very vibrant red

When you think of Tokyo, you don't usually picture deep forests surrounded by mountains and rivers. But think again. Mount Takeo, 599 meters high and located a 30-hour train ride from the city center, is a sacred mountain with the Yokuoin Buddhist temple at its summit. Although it's called a mountain, much of the path is paved, but you can choose from several trails of varying difficulty to reach the top. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the hike, depending on the route you take. Once you reach the summit, you can admire the entire Tokyo Bay and Yokohama. And with a bit of luck, you might even see Mount Fuji on a clear day. However, as the mountain is very popular in autumn, we recommend going on a weekday and starting your climb early in the morning.

Hakone 箱根

Endicular between Gora and Sounzan

Finally, to round out this list, a detour to the prefecture south of Tokyo, home to a place particularly popular with the Japanese. Hakone is located in Kanagawa Prefecture and is famous for its shrine, onsen baths, and scenic views of Mount Fuji. The journey from Shinjuku takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes on the train with the charming name "Romance Car." Once you arrive at Hakone Yumoto, take the mountain train towards Gora. Then, take the funicular to the Sōunzan cable car. It's about a ten-minute ride from Gora Station, and upon arrival, you can admire the funicular descending between the autumn leaves illuminated by the morning sun.
