The most beautiful views of Tokyo

The dry, cold winter air isn't all bad. In fact, this season is the best time to enjoy clear skies free of clouds and pollution, allowing you to admire Tokyo from all angles, including Mount Fuji, from the capital's many terraces and observation points. We won't be talking about the Tokyo Skytree or Tokyo Tower, which everyone knows, but rather some more secluded spots, some requiring a ticket but mostly free.

Tokyo Government Headquarters

Clear winter sky

We begin with a landmark of the Tokyo landscape, yet one that few people truly know about. Indeed, being primarily a hub of Tokyo's political and business life, one wouldn't imagine being able to enter it, let alone find an observation deck at its summit. In addition to free admission, you'll be treated to one of the most breathtaking views of the capital. From Mount Fuji to the Shinjuku district and its forest of skyscrapers, there are countless vantage points. Getting there couldn't be simpler. Head to Shinjuku Station and follow the signs to the "Metropolitan Government," and you'll be in the elevator to the 45th floor before you know it. You won't even feel the 201 meters of the metropolitan headquarters!

Shibuya Sky

Sunset over Mount Fuji

Opened in 2019, this tower in the heart of Shibuya is a must-see. At 46 stories high, it offers an unparalleled view of the famous Scramble Square (Shibuya's legendary intersection) just 229 meters below. Like ants, you'll watch the constant flow of salarymen, high school students, tourists, and curious onlookers pouring from all sides of the intersection every minute. However, unlike the Metropolitan Government Building mentioned earlier, there's an entrance fee here. You'll need to pay 1800 yen (2000 yen if you buy your ticket on-site) to reach the top. We recommend going in the late afternoon while it's still light and waiting for sunset. If you're lucky, you'll be able to admire a fiery red sky with Mount Fuji at its center.

Telecom center building

Rainbow Bridge

This building is located on the artificial island of Odaiba, famous for its giant Gundam and numerous entertainment venues like the renowned Team Lab. While not as tall as the other buildings mentioned above, the 21st floor offers an incredible view of the inner part of Tokyo Bay and the Minato district. With the Rainbow Bridge in the center and the glittering lights of the business district and the majestic Tokyo Tower adorned in its red and white lights in the background, you're guaranteed some exceptional photos.

Entry is free.

Caretta Shiodome

A futuristic landscape

This 47-story, 213-meter-tall building, located in the Minato district, houses not only a huge shopping mall but also numerous restaurants, cultural spaces, and the Advertising Museum. Access to the 46th and 47th floors is completely free, but unfortunately, the view isn't 360 degrees. You can still admire the famous Hama-Rikyu Gardens and a portion of Tokyo Bay. If you'd like to enjoy a panoramic view, you can opt for lunch or dinner at one of the six restaurants on the top two floors. It will cost a few thousand yen, but the experience and the view will most likely be unforgettable.

Carrot Tower

Finally, head to the Carrot Tower, a tower that lives up to its name. In fact, this building takes its name from a competition held among local children and most likely refers to the orange-red brick color of its construction. Although not as tall as many other skyscrapers in Tokyo, its 124 meters and 26 floors offer an unobstructed view of the Shibuya district, 2 kilometers away, and Mount Fuji on a clear day. Access to the observation deck is free.
