Less than 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo, Yokohama (横浜) is more than just another suburb
Others say it's a city with its own unique identity. In terms of population, Yokohama is also the second largest city in Japan, ahead of Osaka, in the Kansai region.
The earliest traces of Yokohama's history date back to the Jomon period, over 10,000 years ago. It was during the Edo period, and particularly the Meiji era (1850-1860), that the city experienced explosive growth. Wandering through the city, one feels the relaxed, almost seaside atmosphere of a city like San Francisco… But the city's distinctly Japanese spirit reminds us that we are in the archipelago!
In this article we will list 5 must-see sites, which can be visited on foot in one day.
Around Yokohama Central Station
If you're coming from Tokyo by train, you'll likely arrive at Yokohama Station. Be careful not to get lost, though! Numerous shopping centers, boutiques, and restaurants line the floors of the station and surrounding buildings. Just a short walk from the station, you can visit part of the headquarters of the renowned Japanese automaker Nissan. The first-floor gallery offers a retrospective of the brand's models in a minimalist style. Take a break at one of the many cafes, then head southeast to the Minato Mirai 21 district.
Minato Mirai 21 (みなとみらい 21)

Conceived in the 1980s, Minato Mirai 21 was completed a few years later. This business and leisure district is a powerful symbol. It illustrates Yokohama's modernity, the importance of its port, and its forward-looking policies.
Those who are not afraid of heights can take a ride on the Landmark Tower. The 69th floor of Japan's 4th tallest building (300 meters high) offers a spectacular view of Tokyo Bay and Mount Fuji.
Those looking for more thrills can visit the amusement park. Cosmo World. From the top of the Ferris wheel (110 meters high), you can admire the famous port of Yokohama.
We come back down to Earth for the next stop, which promises to be both culinary and historical: the instant noodle museum. Yes, you read that right!
Instant Noodle Museum (カップヌードルミュージアム 横浜)
The museum is dedicated to one of Japan's culinary monuments and its inventor., Momofuku Ando (安藤百福). This concept was very innovative for its time, and the popularity of his invention is such that he is nicknamed «"Mr. Noodle"» In addition to the exhibitions retracing this history, numerous fun workshops await young and old alike. The most popular? That's certainly... MY CUPNODDLES FACTORY An opportunity to create your own instant noodle recipe – and to step into the shoes of a genius Japanese inventor!
Red brick warehouse 赤レンガ
After exploring the museum, enjoy the sea air in the (imposing) shade of the city's famous century-old warehouse. It once served as a customs house and import hub. Its typical architecture is reminiscent of late 19th-century England, but with distinctive Meiji-era touches. Depending on the season, you can enjoy the beer festival (autumn), open-air concerts (summer), or a Christmas market and ice rink (winter).
Chinatown 中華街

The last stop of the day (and surely the most impressive!) is Yokohama's famous Chinatown. Just steps from the sea, this district was founded in 1860 by the first foreigners. The population from China shaped the district into the form we know today. It's said to be the largest Chinatown in the world: over 600 shops and thousands of visitors every day! Its colorful architecture allows you to immerse yourself in the heart of the Middle Kingdom. In this district, you can also sample typical and traditional culinary specialties. We recommend coming on an empty stomach… The numerous stalls and restaurants lining the lively streets will make your mouth water, and it will be difficult to resist temptation! Tip: treat yourself to some steamed dumplings (shoronpo) from Hôtenkaku on the main street.
As a bonus!
Do you have some time left? Two options:
- THE Yamashita park and its giant, articulated, 18-meter-tall Mobile Suit Gundam.
- the park of "« Park with a view of the port » (港の見える丘公園) to enjoy a last view of Yokohama and its port.
